Excellence Together: Dakai and Sam

Cornerstone Students Find Examples of Character in One Another

“As iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.”
Proverbs 27:17

As iron sharpens iron, we sharpen one another. Through Jesus, we encourage, we set an example, and we hold each other accountable.

Recently, we observed a beautiful example of this at Cornerstone. Dakai and Sam, both seniors at Cornerstone, play together on the varsity basketball team. They have developed a friendship based on love, respect, and perseverance. On and off the court, they are growing together in Christ and discipling one another and their peers by example. They recognize positive character traits and are accountable to one another to imitate these positive attributes.

Dakai believes Sam emulates an example of perseverance in his life. “Sam is always working his hardest. I’ve never seen him give less than 100%. Seeing his drive has encouraged me to do my best, no matter what I’m doing.”

Sam has also shown Dakai examples of love. “He is the most genuine person I know. He tells the truth. He is FOR everyone, always encouraging people and making them feel like they have a place. He doesn’t let his circumstances dictate how he treats others.”

In reverse, Sam states that Dakai as a clear example of love and respect. “Dakai is a helper. He’s always looking out for others,” said Sam. “If you don’t respect other people, you’ll never treat them with love. If you don’t love other people, you’ll never treat them with respect.”

Our youth face many challenges. By discipling each other and sharpening one another, Sam and Dakai are holding each other accountable and leaning our students on the path to Jesus.
