A Private Elementary School Shaping Minds and Hearts

K4 – Grade 5

Building a Bright Future

The early years of a child’s life play a critical role in developing their mind and shaping their character. At Cornerstone Schools of Alabama, we partner with families to build that solid foundation by excelling beyond state academic standards, learning through exploration, incorporating daily Bible lessons, and reaching for excellence, together.

At our private Christian school in Birmingham we use the rigorous academic framework of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme and Core Knowledge curriculum, which helps students gain a deeper understanding of subject matter. That is just one way Cornerstone is different from other schools. Our highly qualified teachers spark curiosity by encouraging students to ask questions, investigate problems, and think critically — for today and for years to come. Most importantly, faith formation and our character education program are woven into every school day.

International Baccalaureate (IB): An Inquiry-Based Approach

At our private elementary school, students are individually known and cared for as they develop their natural curiosity and a lifelong love of learning. By using an inquiry-based approach to education, we encourage students of all ages to ask questions and seek answers through investigating and researching. Children become involved in their own education and begin to make connections that deepen their understanding.

We also work with families to provide an educational experience that complements the Christian values that children are learning at home. With our small class sizes, our talented teachers create a nurturing environment where students feel safe and supported — and ready to learn.

“Children don’t just memorize Bible verses or engage in chapel activities.

They learn to understand how biblical teachings align with life and have the capacity to spread the Gospel. I have seen my children apply their biblical knowledge to real-life situations, fostering a deep connection between their faith and actions.

— Adrine Smith-Brown, Cornerstone parent

The Cornerstone Way

A Solid Academic Foundation

Our elementary students receive engaging lessons in a small student-to-teacher ratio environment. We safely utilize iPads and Chromebooks as a way to access educational materials and begin teaching students in K4 through Grade 5 about technology. Our students have a special focus on STEM once a week, complete with its own curriculum. In addition, all students receive special instruction daily in the following areas:

  • Character
  • Bible
  • Physical education
Along with technology and STEM, core skills are developed in:
  • Language Arts
  • Library
  • Math
  • Reading
  • Science
  • Social studies
  • Spanish

To help students learn more about their personal interests, health, sportsmanship, and teamwork, teachers host clubs for students weekly. Girls on the Run is offered after school most Tuesdays and Thursdays. Through the Birmingham Regional Independent Athletic Association (BRIAA), students can also participate in basketball, cross country, and volleyball.

A Commitment to Character Development

At Cornerstone Schools of Alabama, we are committed to building character and have received numerous awards for implementing character-building practices. Those practices include a quarterly student character self-assessment, daily character challenges, and the daily integration of our core values: love, perseverance, respect, integrity, and responsibility. Students are recognized each month for exceptional character and are selected for the Cornerstone Character Hall of Fame.

A Focus on Faith

All Cornerstone teachers are certified by the State and have a Bible teaching certificate. Students are taught to integrate biblical principles into their daily lives through daily Bible classes and weekly chapel services. They also learn to create a culture of care and respect for one another and themselves.

“My favorite thing about teaching is hearing the kids sing the songs that they’ve learned.

It’s beautiful and brings me to tears. Teaching has impacted my life tremendously. I wake up every morning feeling like I’m truly walking in my purpose. I absolutely adore my students and I’m proud to be their teacher.”
