The Alabama Accountability Act authorizes donation-funded scholarships for low income students to attend qualified private schools. These scholarships are granted by specially created Scholarship Granting Organizations (or SGO) for the sole purpose of taking private donations and awarding them to low income students in schools which have qualified to receive funds directly from the SGO. Cornerstone Schools has this relationship with Scholarship for Kids, a Birmingham based SGO.
Under the AAA, Alabama taxpayers may claim a dollar for dollar credit against Alabama tax liability for donations to an SGO as follows:
In effect, you can donate to Scholarship for Kids for Cornerstone students at no cost. In addition, because Scholarship for Kids is a 501c3 organization, you may receive additional benefit for the same donation. All donations must be made by December 31 of the current tax year.
To make a no-cost donation to Cornerstone Schools, you must do two steps. First, in order to stay within the $30 million dollar cap, you must register your donation on the Alabama Department of Revenue website (www.ador.alabama.gov/accountability/). Second, send your donation to Scholarships for Kids:
If you have any questions about the AAA, Scholarship for Kids, or the donation process, please consult the Scholarship For Kids website, www.alabamakids.net or call:
