Excellence Together: Mr. Skip and Tyler

Cornerstone Volunteers and Students Overflowing with Love

“May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else, just as ours does for you.”
1 Thessalonians 3:12

At Cornerstone, we are abundantly blessed by so many incredible tutors and mentors. Our volunteers are a tangible sign of God’s love.  The result of the time invested is often an overflow of love from the volunteer to the student and the student to volunteer. This year, we have observed a concrete example of God’s love increase through an Elementary tutor and his student.

Mr. Skip Dorlon has been volunteering at Cornerstone for seven years. For the past two years, he has been tutoring a second-grade student, Tyler.  Tyler said that “Mr. Skip is my best friend.” He explained that “Mr. Skip” not only helps him with math, but also teaches him the importance of being kind to everyone.

Mr. Dorlon shared that beyond academics, he has been able to share his faith with Tyler.  Recently, Tyler was involved in an accident. Through this incident, Tyler showed evidence of his growing faith.  On his way to the hospital, Tyler asked his family to play the worship song he sings at school during chapel. Once they arrived at the hospital, the first thing that Tyler asked the doctors was if they would pray with him. After a few weeks of absence from school, Tyler said he was the most excited to see Mr. Skip upon his return.

Mr.  Dorlon shared, “There are very few people who would have responded to the accident the way Tyler did. To me, this is evidence that the Lord is working in his life. Tyler’s faith increases my faith. It affirms that the Lord made us to love one another in unity. Being a tutor at Cornerstone is one of the biggest blessings of my life. This is an experience I couldn’t have gotten anywhere else.”
